The Issue

Thousands of Cambodian Buddhist monks have reportedly been mobilized to call for Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his supposed role in ending the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

But behind this campaign lies a troubling truth: these monks, many of whom live in poverty and dedicate their lives to peace and service, are being used as political pawns. Their voices are being manipulated to promote a Western politician’s personal ambition, rather than reflecting their own priorities or the needs of their communities.

This is exploitation—plain and simple. It undermines the dignity of the monks, the sanctity of Buddhism, and the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize itself. Using faith leaders in one of the world’s poorest countries as tools for political gain is not only unethical, but deeply disrespectful to Cambodia’s culture and people.

We demand that:

  • The Nobel Committee publicly denounce any attempt to manipulate religious figures for nomination campaigns.
  • The Cambodian government protect monks from being coerced or misused for political lobbying.
  • Global media highlight the exploitation of monks in this case to prevent further abuses.

This is not about politics—it’s about protecting vulnerable communities from exploitation and ensuring the Nobel Peace Prize remains a symbol of genuine peace, not political theater.

Add your voice. Stand against the exploitation of Cambodian monks.

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are writing to express deep concern over the reported mobilization of thousands of Cambodian Buddhist monks to support Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This troubling development suggests that poor and vulnerable religious figures are being exploited for political gain, rather than genuinely expressing their will. Cambodian monks dedicate their lives to spiritual service, not to acting as political tools for foreign leaders seeking recognition.

Such exploitation disrespects Buddhism, undermines human dignity, and devalues the integrity of the Nobel Peace Prize. It also sets a dangerous precedent of using faith communities in low-income countries to advance powerful individuals’ ambitions.

We call on the Nobel Committee to reject such politically motivated campaigns, and on Cambodian authorities to safeguard monks from coercion or manipulation.

Respect for religious figures and for the sanctity of peace must remain above politics.

Sincerely,
