The Issue
Minnesota’s new state flag does not reflect the identity, heritage, or history of the people it represents. For generations, Minnesotans grew up with the original flag — a design steeped in symbolism, culture, and unity. It carried the story of our hard work, resilience, and the diverse roots that shaped the North Star State.
In 2024, Governor Tim Walz and the state legislature enacted a change, replacing the traditional flag with a new design. Many citizens feel this was done without sufficient consultation or respect for the voices of everyday Minnesotans. While officials may claim the goal was modernization, the new design erases an important emblem of our state’s identity.
The original flag, first adopted in 1893, is more than just a banner — it is a proud legacy. It represents the perseverance of generations past and the cultural richness of our communities. A recent Thinking Minnesota poll confirmed what many already know: a significant portion of Minnesotans preferred the traditional design.
By reinstating the original flag, we preserve our cultural heritage, honor our history, and pass on a symbol of pride to future generations. The people of Minnesota deserve a flag that respects their past while guiding their future.
Sign this petition to urge Minnesota’s leaders to restore the original state flag and return to a design that truly embodies the spirit of our state.
