Matt Kaufman Must Resign as Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer

Matt Kaufman Must Resign as Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer

The Issue

Roblox is one of the largest online platforms in the world, with millions of children and teens logging in every day. The role of Chief Safety Officer (CSO) is critical: ensuring the platform is safe, introducing protections against harmful content, and addressing safety incidents quickly and effectively.

Unfortunately, Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s current Chief Safety Officer, has consistently failed in this role. His lack of accountability and poor decisions have left users vulnerable, creators frustrated, and the community losing trust in Roblox’s ability to protect its players.

Examples of Failure Under His Leadership:

  1. Slow Response to Dangerous Users – It took nearly two weeks and massive community backlash to remove the user TheOfficiaITeddy, despite Roblox claiming “action was taken.” By the time his account was deleted, serious damage had already been done.
  2. Broken AI Moderation – Roblox’s automated systems frequently flag innocent users, while harmful content and exploiters remain active. Well-known creators, including Shedletsky himself, have been unfairly penalized, while violators continue to operate.
  3. Targeting Whistleblowers Instead of Fixing Issues – Instead of collaborating with community members exposing safety threats, Roblox has banned those users and even issued cease-and-desist letters. A statement authored by Kaufman labeled these groups “vigilantes,” sending a chilling message that raising safety concerns publicly will get you punished.

Meanwhile, lawsuits against Roblox for safety failures are mounting. Over 400 users in at least nine states are documented as taking legal action. Yet Roblox leadership, under Kaufman’s watch, has chosen to silence critics instead of fixing systemic problems.

Our Demand
For the safety of Roblox’s millions of young users, we call for:

  • The immediate resignation of Matt Kaufman as Chief Safety Officer.
  • Roblox to appoint a new CSO with genuine experience in online child safety, transparency, and community protection.
  • A shift in policy where whistleblowers and concerned users are listened to—not punished.

Roblox’s future depends on trust, and trust depends on safety. It is time for new leadership.

Demand for Resignation of Matt Kaufman as Roblox CSO

Dear Roblox Leadership,

I am writing to express my deep concern about Roblox’s ongoing safety failures under the leadership of Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman.

The CSO role is supposed to ensure that Roblox is a safe platform for millions of children and teens. Yet under Kaufman’s tenure, the community has seen repeated failures:

  • A dangerously slow response to known bad actors, such as TheOfficiaITeddy, where Roblox took nearly two weeks to act despite widespread reports.

  • A broken AI moderation system that punishes innocent creators while allowing harmful content and exploiters to thrive.

  • Hostile treatment of community members raising valid safety concerns, including bans and cease-and-desist letters—rather than addressing the root problems.

These actions have eroded community trust and put players at risk. They also expose Roblox to growing legal liability, with hundreds of users across multiple states suing due to safety negligence.

It is clear that Matt Kaufman is unfit for this role. I urge Roblox to:

  1. Immediately remove Matt Kaufman from his position as Chief Safety Officer.

  2. Replace him with a qualified leader who prioritise transparency, accountability, and child safety.

  3. Change company policy to work with, not against, community members who report safety issues.

Roblox’s reputation and future depend on rebuilding trust. That begins with putting safety first. Please act now to ensure Roblox truly lives up to its responsibility as a platform for young people.

Sincerely,
