The Issue
Jamal Williams, also known as JRoy, is a respected and beloved member of the Austin community. As an educator, mentor, and neighbor, Jamal has dedicated his life to uplifting young people and building connections with families. His impact extends far beyond the classroom—he is a role model, a leader, and a source of positivity for countless students and residents.
Recently, Jamal organized a community event meant to be a safe and fun celebration of the end of summer. Unfortunately, individuals from outside the community arrived and disrupted the gathering with aggression and violence toward both attendees and police. Recognizing the situation, Jamal acted responsibly: he removed himself from the area and relocated the event.
The negative actions that followed were not his doing. Jamal had nothing to do with the violence, nor does he condone or support such behavior. His intentions were—and always have been—to bring people together in a safe, positive way.
Why It Matters
Jamal is more than a community member—he is Mr. Williams, a dedicated educator who has earned the trust and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues. To jeopardize his career or reputation over the actions of others would be not only unjust but also a devastating loss for the young people who look up to him every day.
Our Demand
We, the undersigned, call on Jamal’s school and leadership to:
- Recognize Jamal Williams’ long-standing dedication as an educator and mentor.
- Ensure that he is not held accountable for the reckless actions of individuals outside his control.
- Protect his career, his reputation, and his ability to continue serving the Austin community.
Jamal Williams has spent years supporting this community. It is now our turn to stand up and support him.
