Issue Post
On August 19, 2025, eight innocent dogs — Sasha, Iceberg, Sparky, Gigi, Bandit, Rocky, Selena, and Gizmo — were euthanized at San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS), Texas.
They were not strays. They were not violent. They were owner-surrendered dogs, kept together in one kennel, waiting for a chance at a second home. Instead, they were all put down in a single day.
This is not an isolated incident. Across Texas, overcrowded shelters and outdated policies are leading to mass euthanasia of adoptable pets. While staff often claim they “have no choice,” the truth is: there are always choices when a community stands up for its animals.
These dogs had names. They had personalities. They had the potential to be part of a loving family. Their lives mattered.
We demand urgent reforms at San Antonio ACS:
- Stronger Adoption & Foster Programs – invest in partnerships with rescues, and use social media more effectively to place dogs before euthanasia.
- Mandatory Waiting Periods – no healthy or treatable dog should be euthanized without a minimum of 7–14 days of adoption/foster outreach.
- Transparency & Public Reporting – ACS must publicly disclose euthanasia numbers weekly, with reasons listed, so the community knows what’s happening.
- Community Involvement – launch volunteer networks, transport programs, and cross-state rescue partnerships to reduce kennel overcrowding.
Texas is proud of its communities and its values. But this mass killing of healthy, loving animals is not something to be proud of.
We cannot bring Sasha, Iceberg, Sparky, Gigi, Bandit, Rocky, Selena, and Gizmo back — but we can make sure their deaths were not in vain.
