The Issue
In September, Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines was indicted for shooting Judge Kevin Mullins. At the time, the public was told only part of the story.
Since then, disturbing allegations have come to light: Judge Mullins is accused of engaging in sexual relationships with inmates in exchange for lenient sentencing. One accuser, Tya Adams, has bravely testified, “I was part of it. I was one of them.”
If true, these allegations reveal Mullins abused his position of power in the most exploitative way. Yet, when Stines was indicted, the grand jury was reportedly not informed of these accusations. That matters — because this context could fundamentally change how his actions are judged.
We are not excusing violence. But justice must consider the full picture. If Mullins was abusing his power and preying on vulnerable inmates, then Stines’ case is not that of a cold-blooded killer. It is that of a man pushed into desperate action against a corrupt judge.
What We Demand
- A review of Stines’ charges and sentence to account for Mullins’ alleged misconduct.
- A fair re-examination by the courts, ensuring the grand jury is presented with all relevant facts.
- Consideration of mitigating circumstances that may warrant a lesser sentence.
This is not about rewriting history — it is about fairness. The people of Kentucky deserve a justice system that weighs all evidence, not one that hides the truth.
