The Issue
Roblox is one of the largest online platforms in the world, with millions of children and teens logging in every day. The role of Chief Safety Officer (CSO) is critical: ensuring the platform is safe, introducing protections against harmful content, and addressing safety incidents quickly and effectively.
Unfortunately, Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s current Chief Safety Officer, has consistently failed in this role. His lack of accountability and poor decisions have left users vulnerable, creators frustrated, and the community losing trust in Roblox’s ability to protect its players.
Examples of Failure Under His Leadership:
- Slow Response to Dangerous Users – It took nearly two weeks and massive community backlash to remove the user TheOfficiaITeddy, despite Roblox claiming “action was taken.” By the time his account was deleted, serious damage had already been done.
- Broken AI Moderation – Roblox’s automated systems frequently flag innocent users, while harmful content and exploiters remain active. Well-known creators, including Shedletsky himself, have been unfairly penalized, while violators continue to operate.
- Targeting Whistleblowers Instead of Fixing Issues – Instead of collaborating with community members exposing safety threats, Roblox has banned those users and even issued cease-and-desist letters. A statement authored by Kaufman labeled these groups “vigilantes,” sending a chilling message that raising safety concerns publicly will get you punished.
Meanwhile, lawsuits against Roblox for safety failures are mounting. Over 400 users in at least nine states are documented as taking legal action. Yet Roblox leadership, under Kaufman’s watch, has chosen to silence critics instead of fixing systemic problems.
Our Demand
For the safety of Roblox’s millions of young users, we call for:
- The immediate resignation of Matt Kaufman as Chief Safety Officer.
- Roblox to appoint a new CSO with genuine experience in online child safety, transparency, and community protection.
- A shift in policy where whistleblowers and concerned users are listened to—not punished.
Roblox’s future depends on trust, and trust depends on safety. It is time for new leadership.
